1. The meeting was called to order at 10:17 a.m. The agenda was approved.
2. Minutes of the April 15, 2004 meeting were approved with the
following correction: Betty Cheng was incorrectly listed as absent.
The minutes were changed to show her presence.
3. Comments from the Chairperson: Chairperson Behe thanked the
members of the committee for their work during the past year. She also
thanked those members whose term of office expires with this last
meeting of the academic year.
Chairperson Behe also reminded members that the television news
show, Primetime, scheduled for this evening, would visit/report the
issue(s) of grade inflation and academic integrity.
4. Comments from the Assistant Provost: Assistant Provost Youatt
distributed a report from the Princeton Weekly Bulletin (4/19/04)
relative to proposals to curb grade inflation.
She also spoke on the potential for developing expanded
undergraduate programs off-campus. This may include the possibility for
joint programs with Ohio State University and Purdue University in the
United Arab Emirates (UAE). These programs, if approved and
implemented, would offer U. S. degrees to students in the UAE. UCAP was
asked to consider what types of questions or concerns that might be
raised around implementation of these types of programs.
5. Elections of 2004-2005 UCAP Officers: Chairperson: Folu
Ogundimu; Vice-Chairperson: Rod Phillips; Secretary: Rotating; Second
Representative to the Academic Council: Bridget Behe; Representative to
the Military Education Advisory Committee: Jennifer Hodges;
Representative to the Athletic Council: Steve Dilley.
6. Grade Inflation Subcommittee Report: Chairperson Behe reviewed the report and reviewed the recommendations. The report was approved as submitted.
7. Revisiting the Code of Teaching Responsibility: Discussion
regarding wording relative to changes in the syllabus was active and, in
that Chairperson Behe wanted to move these recommendations forward to
the University Graduate Council (UGC). Discussion focused specifically
on the recommended language regarding substantive changes in the
syllabus. It was moved, seconded and approved to change the paragraph
that outlines the responsibilities of the instructor relative to change
to read: “The instructor of record is responsible for maintaining the
integrity of the syllabus and all changes thereof.”
There being no further business, UCAP adjourned at 10:52 a.m.
