Comments from the Chairperson

Chairperson Dillon stated that the proposed committee name change to the University Committee on Undergraduate Education had been approved by the University Council and would be added to the upcoming Board of Trustees meeting agenda.

Dr. Dillon welcomed the new committee members attending the meeting and thanked the members who were ending their service to the committee for their hard word and dedication.

Comments from the Associate Provost for Academic Services

No comments were made by the Associate Provost for Academic Services.

Request for a New Coordinate Major in Lyman Briggs College – Food Science

Kelly Millenbah, Associate Dean, Lyman Briggs College

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Millenbah.

Dr. Millenbah provided background on the structure of the coordinate major concept and its impact on Lyman Briggs College (LBC) students in those majors. She stated that LBC offers over 35 majors the majority being coordinate majors. Students in coordinate majors participate in Lyman Briggs core requirements and take discipline-specific classes in the unit of the coordinate major. The Food Science coordinate major came about through two independent thought processes—Food Science and Human Nutrition and LBC each recognized the interest that LBC students had in the major and worked together to design the coordinate major.

Committee members asked about the projected enrollment for the new coordinate major and job opportunities that graduates of the program might find. Dr. Millenbah responded that she estimated that 20 students would initially participate in the program but the number may grow as students see connections with human biology. She stated that ConAgra was supportive of adding this coordinate major and she anticipated job opportunities for graduates of the Food Science coordinate major would be available there and in similar types of companies.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Millenbah.

Motion by Mark Axelrod was unanimously approved.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Studies, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request for a new coordinate major in Lyman Briggs College – Food Science.

Request for a Change in Admission Requirement for the BS Degree in Packaging
Rick Brandenburg, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Brandenburg.

Associate Dean Brandenburg stated that Packaging was a limited enrollment major; at one time the enrollment had been around 1,000 majors but that number generated more graduates than the job market could absorb. As a result, enrollment was limited to 550 majors. He noted that Packaging graduates now have multiple job opportunities. He stated that students reaching junior level were required to demonstrate proficiency in physics, math, and chemistry to be considered for admission but it has become apparent that completion of the first semester of calculus was also necessary for student success in the core 300-level Packaging classes. The School of Packaging has recognized that higher level math requirements need to be moved earlier into prospective students programs to make sure students are prepared for the rigor of the core courses. The School currently requires the completion of Math 116 for admission and requests the committee support changing the requirement to completion of calculus or higher math course for admission. The requested change in math requirements for admission would be phased in for students entering as freshman in Fall 2012. Entering freshmen would be informed that the math new math requirements would have to be completed by the time they are juniors. He noted that internal student transfers, particularly from business and engineering, tend to have completed the first course in calculus prior to applying.

Committee members asked what would happen if admission to the major as a sophomore was initiated. Associate Provost Stanford responded that Engineering had an excellent program of admitting when ready that could serve as a model for other programs.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Brandenburg.

Motion by Mark Axelrod was unanimously approved.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Studies, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request for a change in Admission Requirement for the BS Degree in Packaging. The committee recommends the effective date for the change be changed to Spring 2013.

Request to Allow Credits to be Awarded that are Earned in the CLEP and DANTES both Before and After Matriculation at MSU

Linda Stanford, Associate Provost for Academic Services

Associate Provost Stanford reminded the committee that it had recently supported the request to allow credits from the DANTES program to be accepted at MSU prior to matriculation and that the University also accepted CLEP credits prior to matriculation. She stated the request presented to the committee is to accept these credits after matriculation. She noted that students who transfer or are already matriculated may become aware that some of their prior education or training could be evaluated through DANTES and CLEP and can avail themselves of the opportunity to get credit for knowledge learned in non-traditional ways.

The Committee asked if there was a limit to the number of credits allowed. Dr. Stanford stated there was no limit but the number allowed would be based on the amount of credits that is required in an area with 3 to 6 credits being the typical number brought in from CLEP. She noted that the University has a graduation requirement that at least 30 credits are taken on the East Lansing campus (online courses count as the East Lansing campus) and that equivalencies are still determined by the faculty at Michigan State.

Motion by Chris McClain was unanimously approved.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Studies, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request to Allow Credits to be Awarded that are Earned in the CLEP and DANTES both Before and After Matriculation at MSU.

Election of Officers for 2012-13

Chairperson Dillon asked for nominations for officer positions for 2012-13 in addition to the nominations presented in the agenda. Although there were no additional nominations, Jan Brady indicated that she would be returning to UCUS for the 2012-13 academic year and would be willing to continue as the UCUS faculty liaison to the Athletic Council. Abraham Wheeler indicated that he would be willing to continue as the UCUS liaison to the University Committee on Liberal Learning.

The motion by Fred Fico to move the nominations forward as a slate was unanimously approved by the new and continuing committee members for 2012-13.
