Request for a New Bachelor of Arts Degree in Experience Architecture (Action Item)
Janet Swenson, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Letters
Liza Potts, Assistant Professor, Department of Writing, Rhetoric, & American Culture  and Lead Faculty for Experience Architecture

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Swenson and Dr. Potts.

Associate Dean Swenson remarked that the new degree program in Experience Architecture would establish MSU on the cutting edge in the digital humanities. The College of Arts and Letters, already know for its groundbreaking work in digital humanities, has merged MATRIX, a program with a strong international reputation, and WIDE, a newer but equally well known program, for even more strength and visibility. Based on the success of these programs, the Provost invested in cluster hires to facilitate the interdisciplinarity of the digital humanities. Dr. Swenson described the hires as people with practical experience beyond their scholarly endeavors. She thanked engineering for their help in developing this project.

Dr. Potts defined Experience Architecture as a program that combines project management, design basics, computer programming, and communication skills. The person with this degree works with management, programmers, designers, and end-users to facilitate solutions. The program enables the student to connect early with the business cultures that inform the curriculum.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Swenson and Dr. Potts.

Motion by Jan Brady was unanimously approved.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Studies, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request for a new Bachelor of Arts degree in Experience Architecture.

Request to Limit Students in the Major to a Maximum of 70 Credits in Theatre and Dance Courses in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre (Action Item)
Janet Swenson, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Letters

Kirk Domer, Chairperson, Theatre Department

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Swenson and Chairperson Domer.

Chairperson Domer stated the Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are recent additions in studio art and theatre. Similar to interdisciplinary programs, these new degrees require so many credits that students are not required to take cognates. In reviewing the degree requirements, the decision was made to increase the breadth of learning typical of a university degree. The required limitation in dance and theatre courses will require that students enroll in courses outside of the BFA core courses so that the students gain more breadth.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Swenson and Dr. Domer.

Motion by Cynthia Taggart was unanimously approved.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Studies, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request to limit students in the major to a maximum of 70 credits in Theatre and Dance courses in the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre.

After Roundtable, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted by

Sandra Walther
