Request for a New Minor in Arts and Cultural Management Kirk Domer, Chairperson, Department of Theatre
The committee unanimously granted voice to Department of Theatre Chairperson, Domer.
Chairperson Domer stated that the new minor would provide a missing element in the Arts and Letters curriculum and will add value to the qualifications of our graduates through new courses, internship possibilities, and partnerships with business and the Eli Broad Art Museum director. The backbone of the staff for the minor is the addition of the former associate education director of the Lincoln Center and Broadway stage manager to the Department of Theatre faculty. The new minor will include an expansion of courses and will provide growth in internship possibilities for students.
The committee questioned the absence of any Music courses in the proposal and asked if there would be restrictions on enrollment. Chairperson Domer indicated Music would be part of a broad base of areas included in the minor and there were no restrictions on admittance to the minor. Chairperson Domer indicated that students in the new minor will create a portfolio as part of the requirements of the minor as a means of student assessment. The portfolio will be based on the model currently used in the Sustainability specialization.
Voice was withdrawn from Department of Theatre Chairperson, Domer.
Dr. Aronoff moved to forward to the Provost without concern.
The committee amended the motion to suggest initiation of discussion with other units interested in being on the list of units with acceptable credits, such as the College of Music and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Education, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request for a new minor in Arts and Cultural Management. Request
for a Moratorium on Admission to the Bachelor of Science Degree in
Computational Chemistry
Dr. Posey stated that the Department of Chemistry requests a two-year moratorium on BS in computational chemistry program in order to evaluate the future of the program. The program has had a history of low enrollment and no graduates in the preceding 10 years. One student will be graduating in May 2013. As there are other options for students with an interest in Computational Chemistry and the one unique course in the existing major will continue to be offered and an elective, there will be no significant impact on students. There is discussion of creating a specialization in computational science that will involve EGR and math.
After brief discussion, the motion by Ron Perry passed unanimously. The University Committee on Undergraduate Education, in its consultative capacity to the Provost, has no concerns about the request for a moratorium on admission to the Bachelor of Science degree in Computational Chemistry.
Roundtable
Ms. Bank reported that she and Dr. Dillon had met with Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Maybank, to discuss implementation of the proposed grief absence policy. The goal is to make this a centralized policy to ease the minds of students. The ad hoc committee views this as this as being a student affairs issue. The ad hoc committee will have a proposal for discussion by the committee soon.
Dr. Aronoff announced that an unveiling of “art at work” collaboration of RCAH, Peckham Industries, and the College of Engineering would take place on Saturday, February 23, 2013. He invited committee members to attend.
Dr. Perry, UCUE representative to the Military Education Advisory Committee, attended the recent military ball. He reported being impressed with the caliber of the group of students involved in the program.
Meeting adjourned.
