    Comments from the Chairperson

Chairperson Hoppenstand updated UCUE members regarding President Simon’s remarks on MSU’s Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Policy at the 9/23/15 University Council meeting.

Comments from the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education

Associate Provost Estry stated that in regard to the Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Policy, eventually all MSU students will be required to complete the online training.  A system will be put into place to ensure participation.

University accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission is progressing.  Kelly Funk has collected information and is drafting language for each of the criteria.

As part of the University’s student success initiative, the Freshmen Early Warning System (FEWS) and Academic Progress Reports (APR) have been replaced by a system created by the Registrar’s Office called Enhancing Academic Success Early (EASE).  Feedback has been good from advisors.

Effective Fall 15, the new version of the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) included a new structure for University level grievance hearing boards.  Associate Dean Curry has experienced difficulty populating the boards and finding people to serve.  Associate Provost Estry asked UCUE members to encourage faculty to serve on the hearing boards so student cases are not delayed.  Emily Tabuteau asked Associate Provost Estry to send this request via email to UCUE members.

Request to Change the Admission to the College Requirements in the College of Nursing (Action Item)

Teresa Wehrwein, Associate Dean, College of Nursing

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Wehrwein.

Associate Dean Wehrwein stated that the reason for the request is to implement editorial changes to remove the duplication of text and improve the clarity of the information for the reader.

Concern was expressed by one UCUE member that the “and” should be replaced with the word “or” in the first sentence, second paragraph, under Undergraduate Program.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Wehrwein.

    The following motion passed unanimously.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request to Change the Admission to the College Requirements in the College of Nursing with the following amendment:  See DRAFT copy, Page 2, Admission to the College, Item 2, change language as follows:  “with a grade of 2.0 or higher in each course.”

Request for a New Bachelor of Science Degree in Economic Geography (Action Item)

Steve Kautz, Associate Dean, College of Social Science

Alan Arbogast, Chairperson Department of Geography

The committee unanimously granted voice to Associate Dean Kautz and Chairperson Arbogast.

Associate Dean Kautz stated the request for a new BS degree in Economic Geography is in response to an Academic Program Review and to allow for the changing opportunities for Bachelor’s degree recipients.  The proposed new degree will replace the current Bachelor of Science degree in Geography which is in moratorium.

Chairperson Arbogast stated the new degree will help align students with current positions in the field and will expand on the range of jobs that exist for undergraduates.  He stated the degree has direct linkages with business and economics.

Voice was withdrawn from Associate Dean Kautz and Chairperson Arbogast.

    The following motion passed unanimously.

The Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request for a new Bachelor of Science Degree in Economic Geography.

Request for a New Minor in Energy (Action Item)

Richard Lunt, Assistant Professor, College of Engineering

The committee unanimously granted voice to Assistant Professor Lunt.

Assistant Professor Lunt indicated the request for a new Minor in Energy is a result from demand by the student population and a realization that MSU is a leader in energy sciences.  The curriculum that has been designed for the program does not require new courses.  MIT currently offers a minor in Energy and this curriculum was modeled after MIT’s.  Assistant Professor Lunt reported that 20 percent of engineering students go into some type of energy career related fields.

Voice was withdrawn from Assistant Professor Lunt.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the new minor in Energy with the following concerns:

    -        See DRAFT copy, Minor in Energy, 3rd paragraph, change language as follows:  “Enrollment for some courses many not be available to students in some majors.”  UCUE felt it would be appropriate to include a statement referencing the Description of Courses so that the student would know where to look for specific details.

    -        See DRAFT copy, Minor in Energy, Requirements for the Minor in Energy.  As each grouping of courses deals with an important disciplinary area, add to the statement “One of the following courses dealing with…” so it is clear how the courses link to the major goals of the minor.

    -        See DRAFT copy, Minor in Energy, sentence #1, change “fundamental laws,” to “fundamental physical principles,”

    -        See DRAFT copy, Minor in Energy, Requirements for the Minor in Energy, change language as follows:  “Complete at least 21 Credits from the following.”

    -        Concern was expressed that, given the already heavy credit load in EGR, even though some of the courses can be double counted, this will be a considerable number of additional credits particularly if “hidden” prerequisites must also be taken.

    Roundtable

Lorenzo Santavicca reported that he will be working with ASMSU to establish an Honor Code that will encompass all colleges.  Lorenzo will meet with associate deans in each college and will bring materials back to UCUE for suggestions.

Associate Provost Estry noted that emails have been sent out to the University community offering to pay students for notes they have taken in classes.  It is against University Policy to commercialize the notes of faculty and students are often unaware of this.  Associate Provost Estry reported that he responded to this email letting the sender know this practice is against University Policy.  It was also noted that emails have been sent in Chinese to MSU students offering to write papers for Chinese students.  This is in violation of the integrity of student’s work, copy right issues, and academic ownership issues.

    Meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.

    Respectfully submitted by Lynne Frechen.
