Attending: Rich Bellon, Sekhar Chivukula, Andrew Corner, Kathy Forrest, Carolyn Loeb, Richard Miksicek, Matt Pontifex, Fred Rodammer, Jessica Sender, Mary Kay Smith, Emily Tabuteau, Colleen Tremonte, Janette Vani (for Laura Nelson)
Absent: Eva Almenar, Giles Brereton, Marcos Caballero, Jan Eberle, Nicole Geske, Sheng-Mei Ma, Janette Vani, Jacob Snyder, Jordan Stomps Members introduced themselves and stated the College they represent.
The agenda was approved. The minutes were approved for March 16, 2017. Comments from the Chairperson Chairperson Miksicek reminded members that the last UCUE meeting of the academic year will be held on 4/27/17 and the meeting will mainly be for taking care of business items and nominations for the upcoming academic year. Chairperson Miksicek asked members to think about the student evaluation of teaching. There was not time this year to form a subcommittee however this will be an action item moving into fall semester. Comments from the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education Associate Provost Chivukula had no comments.
Request for a New Minor in Turfgrass Management (Action Item) Kelly Millenbah, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Jim Crum, Professor, Plant Soil and Microbial Sciences The committee granted voice to Associate Dean Millenbah and Professor Crum. Professor Crum provided background on current programs in the Department of Plant Soil and Microbial Sciences. He stated that the minor would draw students from the Horticulture Department, Landscape Architecture, and for students interested in managing sports field. A brief discussion took place about the minor being transcriptable. A discussion took place regarding the drop in enrollment in the area of turfgrass management due to the fact of the economic downturn and golf courses closing. Professor Crum stated that the market has now stabilized and jobs in this field are in demand. He also stated that they consult with an industry group about how to increase enrollment and grow the program. Voice was removed from Associate Dean Millenbah and Professor Crum. The following motion passed unanimously. The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request for a New Minor in Turfgrass Management.
Chairperson Miksicek reported that because there were no significant issues with the next three items on the agenda, there will not be departmental representation. UCUE will discuss and vote on the moratoria requests as standard procedure. Chairperson Miksicek reported that the State Department of Education determines guidelines in terms of which programs should be taught in the State of Michigan. The three moratoria requests are due to the fact that they are no longer mandated by the State, therefore there is no teaching demand for these teacher certificates
Request for a Moratorium on Admission to the Disciplinary Teaching Minor in Computer Science (Elementary Certification) (Action Item) The following motion passed unanimously.
The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request for a Moratorium on Admission to the Disciplinary Teaching Minor in Computer Science (Elementary Certification).
Request for a Moratorium on Admission to the History Disciplinary Teaching Minor Available for Elementary Education (Action Item) The following motion passed unanimously.
The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request for a Moratorium on Admission to the History Disciplinary Teaching Minor Available for Elementary Education.
Request for a Moratorium on Admission to the Russian Disciplinary Teaching Minor Available for Elementary and Secondary Education (Action Item) The following motion passed unanimously.
The University Committee on Undergraduate Education duly considered and endorsed the request for a Moratorium on Admission to the Russian Disciplinary Teaching Minor Available for Elementary and Secondary Education.
